beta.SAM.gov (Legacy Reference)

beta.SAM.gov was the name given to the next-generation version of the federal government's System for Award Management during its transitional rollout period between approximately 2018 and 2020. It served as the replacement for the legacy FedBizOpps (FBO) contract opportunity portal and the legacy SAM.gov registration system. It is now simply the production SAM.gov at sam.gov.

What is beta.SAM.gov (Legacy Reference)?

The federal government used the "beta" label to signal that the new consolidated system was under active development and user testing while the legacy systems remained operational in parallel. The beta.SAM.gov environment aggregated multiple procurement-related systems, including SAM registration, contract opportunity posting, wage determinations, entity validation, exclusions, and federal hierarchy data, into a single unified platform.

The transition concluded in November 2019 when beta.SAM.gov fully replaced FedBizOpps as the mandatory posting location for federal contract opportunities above the simplified acquisition threshold, as required under FAR Subpart 5.1. All new solicitations, pre-solicitation notices, award notices, and amendments were directed to the new platform. The legacy FedBizOpps system at fedbizopps.gov was subsequently decommissioned.

The consolidation was part of a broader GSA initiative under the Integrated Award Environment (IAE) program to modernize and unify federal procurement data systems. The IAE program also transitioned FPDS (Federal Procurement Data System) reporting, FAPIIS integrity data, and wage determinations onto the SAM.gov platform over subsequent years.

Why it matters for contractors

Understanding the beta.SAM.gov legacy label matters primarily for contractors who encounter older procurement guides, training materials, blog posts, or internal agency SOPs that still reference the beta URL. Any content using "beta.SAM.gov" is referring to what is now simply SAM.gov, and links to the old beta subdomain redirect to the current production site.

Firms that began their SAM.gov registration during the transition period should verify that their entity registration was properly migrated and remains active under the current system. Registration renewals are required annually, and any lapse in active registration disqualifies a firm from receiving federal contract awards.

A contracting consultant updating their firm's onboarding materials finds a paragraph that instructs new contractors to "go to beta.SAM.gov to register." They update the guide to point to sam.gov, note that the beta subdomain now redirects to production, and remind clients that the system is identical to what was formerly called beta.SAM.gov and before that was split between SAM.gov and FedBizOpps.
